Why Christians when they invite people to their party they ask them to pay or bring something?

it is not just christians, and i have never been asked, nor has my family, to pay. we are asked to bring things like dessert or something, but that isn't just christian, its good manners. You can surely stick a crowbar in your wallet and manage to bake a batch of cookies or something.
