Is bangkok safe for travel?

i'm going to be in bangkok 24th-28th may. we've been advised to cancel but i would like to know if anyone has recently been to/is currently in bangkok, and whether the situation is actually that bad? are all the malls e.g. MBK, platinum mall etc all open? thanks for your help!
